PUPILS at a village primary school have been enjoying lessons in the open air thanks to a new garden which was created with help from local businesses.

The Parents and Friends Association of Uffington C of E Primary School in Lincolnshire approached various companies to help fund the project, including Jackson Building Centres. The company’s Stamford branch, which is just a few miles from the school, happily donated a quantity of block paving to create an attractive courtyard area and pathways. The branch also supplied additional packs at cost price to cut down expenses further.

A special tea party was held recently to celebrate the official opening of the garden which is used regularly by the school’s 92 pupils. The main organisers, Lyn Venables, Jane Franks and Sarah Babbs, were delighted with the support the project received from the local community.

Lyn explained: “We thought it would be nice to create a Victorian-style, shaded garden for the children to enjoy and the area was disused and in quite a mess before. A lot of people helped with the work and provided materials and we were extremely grateful to Jackson’s for its generous donation. The paving looks fantastic and we’re really pleased with the results.”

The garden, which is often used for lessons and assemblies, also features flower borders and covered seating areas. It was designed with help from landscaping expert and TV gardener Bunny Guiness who was invited to the opening ceremony.

Jackson’s Stamford branch manager Lathen Tuplin said he was delighted to support the scheme. “We are always keen to help the local community whenever possible. We stock a wide range of landscaping products and were happy to supply our popular Plaspave buff paving for the project. The pupils are obviously making the most of their new garden and it’s also nice to know that it will be enjoyed by generations of schoolchildren for many years to come,” he added.
