By transforming your loft area you can open up a whole host of opportunities.

WHEN space in the home is at a premium, what do you do? Faced with the option of either moving to a larger property or extending our current home, it seems that more and more of us are adapting our houses to suit our needs.

Increased numbers of homeowners are getting creative and transforming the loft space to create extra rooms and at the same time add value to the home.

Transforming the loft, which is normally used as a dumping ground for unwanted or infrequently used items, can open up a whole host of possibilities. The majority of loft conversions are carried out to provide extra bedrooms. However, they can also be turned into bath or shower rooms, kitchens, playrooms or office space, provided the correct planning and building regulations are followed.

Lincolnshire-based builders’ merchant, Jackson Building Centres, has found that its branches are taking an ever-increasing number of enquiries about loft conversion projects.

Jackson’s marketing manager Colin Bartleet said: “The loft is often a hidden asset and many can be easily converted to create versatile living spaces. Jackson’s can supply all the equipment and advice to help homeowners make the best use of the space that they have.”

Whether you plan to turn the loft space into an extra bedroom or a bathroom, Jackson’s stock everything needed for the project from loft ladders, staircases and flooring to heating equipment and roof windows. They stock all the tools and materials needed and the staff can provide expert advice to help you kick-start your project. They will also be able to point you in the right direction should you require additional help regarding planning and building regulations.

The centres also provide all the products required for all those finishing touches ranging from decorating products and wall coatings to down-lighters and window blinds.

Anyone planning to convert their loft can also get further information from a free leaflet produced by the builders’ merchants. Simply log onto the website www.jacksonbuildingcentres.co.uk, go to the ‘Contact Us’ section, key in your details and Jackson’s will put a copy in the post to you.
